What is Wing Chun/Ving Tsun?
Wing Chun (or Ving Tsun) is a martial arts system developed a few hundred years
in ancient China. In Hong Kong, it is known to be a gentlemen's martial art due to
it's simple refined movements that did not require the raw power found in
other hard style martial arts.
In the West, it is known to be an effective street fighting martial art due to it's
aggressive, efficient and direct approach.
Wing Chun was unknown outside of China, until a man named
Yip Man (葉問) started teaching it publicly in Hong Kong from the 1940's to the early 1970's.
One of Yip Man's most
famous student was movie star Bruce Lee (李小龍). Today, Wing Chun is one of the most
widely practiced Kung Fu styles worldwide.
In the Yip Man system of Wing Chun, training includes learning solo three hand forms,
a "wooden-man" form, the Dragon Pole, the Butterfuly knives and
partner drills & sparring.

Wong Shun Leung, aka WSL, (1935-1997) a student of Yip Man,
was considered by many to be
the most famous fighter of the Wing Chun clan in the early 1950's.
He was also Bruce Lee's principal Wing Chun instructor in Hong Kong.
Wong Shun Leung's Wing Chun Method was developed though the numerous
challenge matches with fighters of other styles in the 50's and 60's.
Today, the WSL lineage is considered one of the best lineages
in the Yip Man system to train under.

The Wong Shun Leung Method is best described
by David Peterson, a teacher of the WSL Method and a student of Wong Shun Leung.
He notes
"WSL Ving Tsun is not a
system which requires the rote learning of set sequences of movement.
Instead, it makes use of a handful of concepts, coupled with a small
repertoire of techniques (which are all derived from just six basics .
taan sau, bong sau, fook sau, the basic vertical punch (yat ji jik kuen),
basic stance (yi ji kim yeung ma), and the dang geuk, or basic ascending
heel kick.) to deal with any situation."

Background
The NYC Wing Chun workgroup was created by George Lee to find training partners interested in learning and training Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun.
The Workgroup is not a school nor a meet-up club for drop-in exchange club. We focus on training specific ideas and concepts behind the WSL Wing Chun Method.
The group is also used as an informal training ground for the expansion of new training ideas and study. For more details on our training methods can you found here. More videos of our training can be found here.
George Lee is trained by Ernie Barrios in the
Wong Shun Leung Method.
Ernie Barrios is the head instructor of the
Applied Body Mechanics Ving Tsun
in Los Angeles, a fully
certified coach in the Gary Lam Wing Chun System and certified
by David Peterson
in the Wong Shun Leung Method.
George Lee travels regularly to the West coast to train with Ernie Barrios and
his group.
